Investigation of turbulent flows using spillway models aiming to aid downstream migration of fish

Dams and other flow control structures constitute obstacles to upstream downstream aquatic habitats, reducing life-cycle success even eliminating diadromous potamodromous fish species from river basins. Providing effective passage past hydroelectric dams is critical for restoring habitat connectivity sustaining populations of species. Surface water release over spillways in diverting turbines establishing a safe bypass migrants. Developing an system requires both biological knowledge behavior abilities, as well hydraulic spillway flows provide hydrodynamic conditions that may exploit. The present study experimentally investigates several depths, velocity, turbulence fields intended promote the migration spillways. Instantaneous velocity were measured open recirculating rectangular channel. A 90° standard model, model with modified face slope 45°, tested two depths. results show presence distinct recirculation bubble at heel shallower depth. It was concluded be suppressed by either increasing depth or decreasing slope. Decreasing also resulted more uniform distribution acceleration lower along spillway. suitable
